what is foot drop ?
Foot Drop, also known as drop foot, is a condition where individuals encounter difficulty in raising the front part of their foot. As a result, they may experience dragging of the front of their foot along the ground while walking, which poses challenges and obstacles in the walking process.
How is Foot Drop Caused?
Foot drop is not classified as a disease, but rather as a result of various contributing factors. The most prevalent causes of foot drop are stroke, disc problems, multiple sclerosis (MS), accidents, and complications arising from medical surgeries, among other potential factors.
How is Foot Drop Diagnosed?
Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination for numbness and abnormal gait. Imaging studies may be ordered to identify any anatomic abnormalities such as bony overgrowths or tumors that may be compressing the nerve.
What are the Treatment Options for Foot Drop?
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Your doctor may suggest orthotics such as braces, splints and shoe inserts. Physical therapy may be ordered to strengthen the foot muscles and improve range of motion and gait. Nerve stimulation may also be recommended. Successful treatment of the underlying cause may be able to completely cure foot drop. Chances of recovery are better with early intervention.
